3 Artists That Set The Stage On Fire At Mural Festival

3 Artists That Made Every Penny Of Your Ticket Worth It!

Our experience at Mural Festival was an eye opener in so many ways. We’ve been introduced to the crème de la crème of street artists and musicians.

When I wasn’t in a mosh pit, jumping around to the sound of Schoolboy Q, I was probably in the crowd wondering if this was the last time I was seeing Cj Flemings perform in Montreal before his inevitable big break. Among all the live performances, three artists stood out by the way they energized the crowd even when there were only 40 of us watching.

Theophilus London

Theophilus London, an artist that came directly from New York for Fool’s Gold‘s homecoming event, is by far one of the most competent artists I’ve seen in a live performance throughout the whole Mural Festival. I must admit that I didn’t know much about him beforehand but he sparked my curiosity from the very beginning. At first, I thought he was only a DJ. He was playing a nice variety of hits and underground electro songs that made the crowd go crazy even though it was cold as ice outside. I was impressed by the unique connection that he has with his audience as an artist. While the music was playing Theophilus took the mic and talked to us about his past relationships, experiences in the music industry and point of view. I think he brought back something missing in music, i’m talking about the fact that as an artist you need to make the public feel your passion and relate to you on a personal level. Things got real when he decided to bringning people on stage and vibe with them. He really kept the energy going. Theophilus showed us a different sides of himself when he started to sing with distinct RNB and hip hop influences. Named the reincarnation of Micheal Jackson by Kanye West, Theophilus London will take you to musical places you’ve never been before.

SHASH’U

Shash’u is defintely Fool’s Gold secret weapon. Once again, I was confronted with the fact that I really have to do my homework on what is going on in the scene. I couldn’t believe that this incredible DJ/producer didn’t appear on my dopeness radar. Shash’U is from Montreal and represents the city worldwide with his dynamic presence on stage and his musical ear. He brought a local dance crew with him and made it clear that the bad weather wasn’t going to stop him from killing the show. At one point, it was hard for our cameraman to shoot, because he was so busy vibing. The crowd grew steadily when Shash’U started to hit the 1’s and 2’s. He stood out because he knows how to read his crowd, he knows what to play and when to play it. Imagine it for yourself: one minute jumping to OG Bobby Johnson and the next being taken back in time and to vibe to classics like Zouk La Se Sel Medikaman.

Kardinal Offishall

Kardinal Offishall will always be our first canadian ambassador regardless of who carries the torch today. During his set, he expressed nothing but love for Montreal. He explained that he always feels at home here and whenever they needed him to perform, he’ll be here by the very next morning. It was an intense moment in which – for once – it wasn’t about a Montreal versus Toronto or any other rivalry we share with people from the 6. It was about reuniting for this special moment and enjoying our love of hip hop music. Speaking of, Kardinal Offishall wanted to make sure that Montreal’s audience had their stuff together when it comes to music: he started his set with an amazing selection of the best old school songs. Honestly, none of that can match what I felt when he played my all time favourite of his: “Ol’ Time Killing**“.
